Review: Polaroid Optics Variable ND Filter vs. LightCraft Workshop Fader ND Mark 2

So I have been told that a Variable ND filter is a must for recording video, especially in event situations (like weddings), or anytime your preference is a run-and-gun style of shooting; where you have no control over lighting. And since your shutter speed is usually fixed, your preference for aperture is generally set, leaving really only a small window with ISO - a variable ND filter just makes things so convenient. At least, more convenient than using set ND filters.

After using a variable ND filter, I definitely agree that they are a must have - though they do come with their drawbacks.

Currently I own the Polaroid Optics Variable ND Filter and the LightCraft Workshop Fader ND Mark 2. The former runs around $55, depending on what size, and the latter runs around $129, also depending on what size you get.

Here are some test shots with them to help point out the drawbacks.

Notice the striations in the bokeh in the Polaroid VND image, especially in the yellow marigolds. Also, you can see how the contrast flattens with the VND filter in place, as compared with the original image.

Here you can notice the lessening of detail when a VND is used, though this is more apparent when pushed to maximum zoom in zoom lenses. The plant images have been enlarged to show both the striation drawback and detail loss.

Lastly, you notice a distinct, almost "X" pattern that developes near the maximum setting of the VND, as regards exposure. Instead of the clean exposure across the image, some areas are darkened more so. You can begin to see the "X" pattern starting around the mid range of the two filters.

However, once again, the LightCraft Workshop filter does a better job than the cheaper Polaroid Optics filter.

PLEASE NOTE that neither of the two VND's are weather-sealed. Meaning small, or fine, dust particles may enter between the two rotating glass elements. So if you are shooting in a desert, or a very dusty place, bear this in mind.

Overall, I still think the VND filter is a necessity for the videomaker, even a set of standard ND filters. It is as simple as having the tools necessary to shoot in various settings.

I'll revisit this when/if I get a more expensive VND filter.

Pretty Much Whatever is Awesome Channel

So I have started a collection of Vimeo videos I've come across over the last year or so that have been, perhaps, inspirational, something that made me laugh (out loud), something that I really enjoyed; essentially, anything that was pretty awesome.

So if you are bored, have a minute, and want to partake in some awesomeness, check out these videos from some pretty talented people.

I warn you, if you are "safe" in your morality, not all of these will be for you. Some of these are artsy, perhaps earthy, too earthy; some may not make sense; some you might consider inappropriate at best. 

But sometimes I think you pass through the storm instead of trying to go around it.

New CGM Video

Working on a new logo animation for CGM. Got an AE template from Videohive.net and then modified it. Definitely takes away the super long hours and is cheaper than just contracting it out. Is that a plug for Videohive? Meh, first time using them, and it works for me.

Which, in a creative sense, I think is good if you are a project manager/ producer/ editor who has no staff, or a tiny staff, or at least, a staff that's really a JV or B-team. Either way, you still have to make another's labor work for you and your project and your client.

Plus, anything that can get you into someone else's workflow and shake up your own (which leads to making your own workflow better and perhaps streamlined) is a good thing.

Picture Profile Comparison Video

I normally shoot with Technicolor's Cinestyle profile in my Canon 7D, but I was recently challenged by another cinema photographer to shoot with my color in place (just tweaking the color later) because it would allow me to see the scene the way it was meant to be seen and inspire me to shoot accordingly.

I never really thought about it before, but of course I went about to creating my own picture profiles. 

  • HOPPY is meant to be blown out a little, I like to dial it down to see what coloring I can do with it afterwards.
  • NEUE is meant to be almost a little underexposed so a gamma shift later won't blow it out.
  • MARCO is just a yellow coloring, with maybe some interesting possibilities later in how to color it.
  • And FLAT SODA was my attempt to dial in towards the Cinestyle look but with a little more contrast in it.

 

 

5DtoRGB plugin test: Round 1

Recently saw the following video by Chris Marino dealing with Rarevision's free 5DtoRGB plugin that transcodes your h.264 MOV files from DSLRs so that they can better be color corrected.

A free plugin? Yes, I'll take it!

After transcoding a h.264 MOV file into uncompressed 10-bit with the plugin, I put it through a basic trial test, here below.

CONCLUSIONS:

Well, the file was originally about 300 MB. Uncompressed it was 12.5 GB.

The artifacts were almost negligible at best. Of course, I was doing only basic color correcting, and no effects were done to the video footage. I'm sure the compressed file will fall apart more the more that is done to it. To be sure, I'll do some more tests later. But here is the first round.

Making of WHAT I...

So I think I've finally been able to complete my COLOR TEST PROJECT. This is the third generation of the idea, and I think it's finally finished and I can stop going back to it.

Of course with my ever favorite KK in it. The coloring process can be see here below:

All footage was shot on the Canon 7D with a 24mm f1.4L USM lens.

Edited in Adobe Premiere Pro, first color process was in Redgiant Softeware's Magic Bullet Colorista Free 1.0, and the second color process with some FX was done with Digieffects Aged Film.

I shoot only in Technicolor Cinestyle, but the majority of the footage was not shot using it since I hadn't yet adopted the Technicolor Cinestyle at the time, but I highly recommend that picture profile.

Filters, WHAT?!?!?!

Got a question about what filters do, and what they are good for. So I thought I would post my response to him and the link I gave him; maybe it will be useful for you!

WHY DO I GET CRUSHED OUT COLORS IN THE SKY, AND WHEN I ADJUST FOR THAT, THE SUBJECT IS TOO DARK. DO I NEED A FILTER FOR THIS? IS A UV FILTER WHAT WILL WORK???

From my understanding, let's say there is a scale from 0 to 100, where zero is black and 100 is white, and the scale moves dependent on whatever is your brightest element. Just like if you are staring at the sun, you can't see everything else. The blow out on the highlights occurs because of your uneven lighting; which is what happens in natural light, during peak daylight (usually around noon-3 is the brightest). The brighter your brightest element, and the more focused you are on it, the less you'll see and get detail in elements that are darker. If you concentrate your image on the dark places, then the highlights will be blown out and there will be no detail in them.

SO, either shoot NOT during peak daylight, choose a time closer to dawn or dusk, to get more even lighting, or you enter the world of filters and (if you are still photographer you shoot RAW format or shoot multiple images of the same but at different exposures) post-production and processing.
